The Human Condition: Achievement
Many photographers, such as Henri Cartier-Bresson, Sandra Eleta, Dorothea Lange and Peter Turnley, capture a moment in time that expresses emotion or records an event that is part of the rich variety of our human experience. Sometimes, they explore how we relate to others and moments that are important to us. Investigate relevant sources and produce your own work in response to one of the following: companionship, achievement and relaxation.

I have chosen the theme The Human Condition - Achievement because when i hear the word achievement i think of happy people smiling and laughing and i think of people jumping for joy, weather they have won the olympics or achieved a personal goal each reaction is priceless. I find the expressions
Research: PhiliPpe Halsman
Starting in the early 1950s I asked every famous or important person I photographed to jump for me. I was motivated by a genuine curiosity. After all, life has taught us to control and disguise our facial expressions, but it has not taught us to control our jumps. I wanted to see famous people reveal in a jump their ambition or their lack of it, their self-importance or their insecurity, and many other traits. – P.H.

my favourite imageThis is my favourite image that i recreated in the same genre as Philippe Halsman. The simplicity of this picture still displays expressive pieces of art. In comparison to people being more self conscious when they pose for photographs. Philippe Halsman created this technique which he coined jumpology by working with a wide range of celebrities from Marilyn Monroe to Salvador Dali.

Before After
This image shows a sun set setting, with a silohoutte of a female sitting cross legged with her hands raised above her head, forming a heart shape with her hands. The image is in colour, and this is an important factor for this photograph. If it was taken in black and white, you would not be able to appreciate the sunset and would not create the same affect.
The composition of this photograph is still and calm, this is also organised and shows precision as the symbol that is created above her head is centered exactly in the middle of the sun capturing the brightest point. The person taking the picture is quite close to the female sitting down facing the sea and sun set. It is probable that they are taking the picture from the same height as she is sitting on the ground. This has a great affect because if the photographer were any closer or any further the precision of the sun and the symbol she has made with her hands would not be right. The photographer was not moving at the time the picture was taken, the sea is also appears peaceful and this enforces the element of calm and stillness. The photographer along with the model in the picture is showing their appreciation for the calmness of the sea and sunset. |
I had a look at Gillian Wearing's photography, she took a piece of paper and a pen and asked random people that she saw for example a police officer, a business person etc and ask them to write down how they are feeling in that moment of time and what people wrote would surprise you because you never know how someone is feeling because we all put up a front. For example a police officer we would think they are quite strong and feel in control but when she was asked to write down something she wrote 'HELP' this makes us think people go to the police for help but we don't think they might need help themselves. I found this quite interesting so I decided to do somewhat the same thing but instead of writing how they feel I told them to write something they feel they have achieved in their life time no matter how small or big they thought it was, and I got some interesting responses all of these are above.
Some of the images worked better than the others, some where over exposed and some where under exposed so I took a couple of each person till I got a picture I thought I was happy with.

Final Evaluation
I chose the theme Human Condition - Achievement because i have an interest in people and their feelings. I think it is not fair that my entire future is dependent on how i perform as a teenager at school, as i feel that i am treated as a child but the expectation is for me to act as an adult. These feelings of mine have influenced to decide to take these style of photography
